A folder full of files named things like "IMG_4821.jpg" and "Screenshot 2026-08-14 at 3.42.11 PM.png" is hard to search, sort, or hand off to someone else. A consistent pattern like "vacation-001.jpg" through "vacation-042.jpg" sorts correctly in every file browser, makes the sequence obvious at a glance, and avoids the auto-generated names cameras and screenshot tools default to. This matters even more when uploading files somewhere that displays them in filename order rather than date order, or when sharing a batch of files with someone who wasn't there when they were taken and has no context for what "IMG_4821" actually shows.
The order your browser reports them in when you select them — usually alphabetical, but this can vary slightly by browser and operating system.
Yes — photos, documents, or any other file type. The renamer only changes the filename, not the file contents.
It's always preserved exactly as it was, even for filenames with multiple dots (like "archive.tar.gz," which keeps its ".gz") — only the name portion before the extension changes.
Yes — if you set 2-digit padding but have more than 99 files, the numbering simply grows to 3 digits once it's needed (100, 101...) rather than wrapping around or losing files.
No. Renaming and zipping both happen locally in your browser — your files are never sent to a server.
We've noticed an ad blocker is active. Cwtch.es relies on ads to stay free, so zips downloaded while a blocker is active will include a small credits.txt file alongside your renamed files. Disable your ad blocker for this site (or add it to your allow-list) and recheck to download without it.
