Making a Digital Advent Calendar for Your Community

24 or 25 doors is more content than it sounds like — a little planning in November saves a lot of scrambling in December.

Decide the shape before you start filling doors

Two decisions up front make everything after them easier: how many doors, and what starting date. 24 doors (the classic December 1st–24th) is the traditional choice; 25 extends it through Christmas Day itself, which suits a "big finale" door well. Once you've set the start date, every door after it unlocks exactly one calendar day later — so it's worth double-checking the date before you start writing content around it.

What actually goes behind a good door

The biggest trap with a 24-door calendar is treating every door the same, which tends to make the middle stretch feel like filler. A few things that make doors feel worth opening:

Why doors unlocking for real matters

Part of what makes an advent calendar work is the wait — a door that unlocks the moment it's created isn't really an advent calendar, just a gallery. Anyone with the share link can open whatever's already unlocked, but never see ahead of today, which keeps the daily-reveal feeling intact even when everyone's opening it on their own schedule rather than gathered in one place.

A simple production schedule that actually gets finished

  1. Mid-November: Decide door count and start date, and rough out a one-line idea for each door — doesn't need to be finished content yet, just a placeholder idea so nothing gets missed.
  2. Late November: Fill in the first week's worth of doors properly, since those get opened first and set the tone.
  3. Throughout December: Keep filling doors a few days ahead of when they'll unlock, rather than all at once — much less daunting than trying to finish all 24 in one sitting.

Try it yourself

The Advent Calendar Maker handles the door-locking, the share link, and the day-by-day countdown automatically — you just choose the door count and start date, then fill in messages and photos whenever you're ready.
