More tile photos and higher detail levels give a more accurate result — with only a handful of tiles, expect noticeable repetition. Higher color blend makes the target image clearer from a distance but makes individual tiles less recognizable up close.
A photo mosaic depends on a bit of an optical trick: up close, each tile is clearly its own separate photo, but step back and your eye stops resolving the individual tiles and instead blends them into the larger image they collectively form — the same reason pointillist paintings and old newspaper halftone prints read as smooth images from a normal viewing distance despite being made of many small marks. This means a mosaic with more, smaller tiles reads better as a coherent image at a normal distance, while fewer, larger tiles keep more detail visible in each individual photo at the cost of the illusion working less convincingly. There's a genuine tradeoff between "recognizable overall image" and "recognizable individual tiles," and the right balance depends on what you're going for.
At least a handful to get a recognizable result — the more you provide and the more varied their colors, the better the mosaic looks and the less repetition you'll see.
Each grid cell picks whichever tile photo's average color is the closest match — with a small set of tile photos, the same one will get reused wherever that color fits best. This is completely normal for photo mosaics.
A photo with clear, distinct areas of color and a recognizable subject at low detail works best — a simple portrait or bold graphic reads more clearly as a mosaic than a busy photo full of fine detail throughout.
