People are surprisingly good at spotting patterns that shouldn't be there — a "random" split that happens to put the same two people together every time, or always separates certain names, tends to get noticed and questioned, even when it really was random chance. This is a well-documented quirk of how people perceive randomness: truly random sequences often look less "random" to us than sequences that are actually patterned but feel evenly spread out. Using an unbiased shuffle avoids this problem at the source, so when groups do end up looking a little uneven or a particular pairing comes up, there's a straightforward, honest answer for why: that's just what chance produced this time.
