Tipping norms vary more than people expect

What counts as a normal tip is far from universal. In the US, tipping is a deeply embedded part of how service staff are paid, and 15–20% is broadly treated as standard rather than exceptional. In much of Europe, a service charge is often already included in the bill, and any additional tip tends to be smaller and more optional — rounding up or leaving a modest amount is common rather than a fixed percentage. In some countries, including Japan, tipping isn't customary at all and can even come across as awkward. If you're somewhere unfamiliar, it's worth checking local norms rather than assuming your home country's expectations travel with you — and checking whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding a tip on top of it.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tip get split evenly among everyone?

Yes — the total (bill plus tip) is divided equally by the number of people, so everyone pays the same share regardless of what they individually ordered.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Conventions differ, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common practice in many places, since tax isn't part of what the service itself cost. Either way, the difference is usually small — this calculator works from whatever total you enter.
